We have seen our fair share of faulty electrics, whether caused by a previous bad job by a local electrician or from a DIY project gone horrible wrong. When you have faulty electrics, it can be a serious fire hazard and can lead to electrocution, or at worst a potentially fatal accident.
Due to the danger of faulty wiring, electrics were brought in to building regulations. However, any previously existing wiring installations are not covered, but if you make significant alterations or new additions to the wiring in your home, the regulations come into force. As such you might find that, if your property has not had a rewire, then you could be in danger.
Upgrading your wiring
If your particular property has not been rewired within the last 20-30 years, it's very likely that it will need upgrading at least a little in order to bring it up to the current standards and regulations.
If you plan on starting a project that may require major remodelling work that constitutes a material alteration, it is likely that you will need to rewire part, if not all, of the property.
This will most likely include upgrading the consumer unit (fuse box). If you are planning on extending your home, or converting part of it such as an attic or garage then this will be classed as new work.
Therefore, any new wiring installations will have to conform to building regulations.
Upgrading for safety purposes
All existing wiring may have to be upgraded to ensure that it can handle the additional loads safely, it is earthed to current requirements and that the cross bonding is satisfactory.
The rest of the existing wiring does not require an upgraded, except where upgrading is required by the energy efficiency requirements of the Building Regulations, i.e. central heating controls.
